    Where to stay in Split?

There are essentially three best areas to stay in Split. By booking early you can easily find good deals even in the best areas, no need to stay far from the main attractions (and pay more for transport and parking) or in dilapidated apartments.

The best areas to stay in Split are:

    1. The Old Town and Diocletian’s Palace, which is part of the Old Town.
    2. The City Center: the area immediately outside the Old Town offers modern accommodation – some with free parking – at reasonable prices.
    3. The beaches south of the city center: Bacvice, Žnjan, Firule and Podstrana beaches are the best in Split and boast a huge choice of good hotels.

Those who want to visit Split’s fabulous attractions, Diocletian’s Palace (UNESCO), picturesque medieval squares and the charming Riva promenade, should stay in the city center. Here you will be able to enjoy the vibrant and pleasant atmosphere of Split to the fullest, its best restaurants and the picturesque alleys of the Old Town, which are enchanting at sunset and in the evening. Split is very popular for its boutique hotels set in fabulous historic buildings with exposed stone walls and elegant furnishings.

Couples and families who also want to enjoy a relaxing stay by the sea, then could opt for hotels close to the beaches of Split: here you will have swimming pools, spas, top quality hotels and great seafood restaurants.

Split Hotel Booking: Best Seasons and Tips from a Local

Split hotels are among the most popular in Croatia. Split is one of the most famous and beautiful destinations in Dalmatia and was made world famous by Game of Thrones, which was filmed here. Its majestic imperial palace, the Diocletian’s Palace, is one of the most famous and best preserved buildings of the Roman Era, and one of the most visited after the Colosseum!

Unsurprisingly, hotels in Split are slightly more expensive than hotels in other coastal towns in Croatia. The rates are comparable to those of other historic towns, such as Dubrovnik. However, the hotels in Split are of a very high standard: the old town is full of fabulous boutique hotels and guesthouses set in wonderful historic buildings. This has made Split a favorite destination for luxury travelers, who can find fabulous hotels and great restaurants serving the best of regional cuisine here.

However, there is no shortage of more affordable accommodations, but consider booking well in advance. In July and August the city is packed with tourists, the best hotels are often fully booked and the rates tend to soar (even above € 350 per night for a good quality hotel).

By booking well in advance you can get better rates and secure a room in one of the best hotels. An alternative, for those who can, is to travel in the shoulder seasons (mid-April to mid-June and from the end of September to mid-October). In these months the city is less crowded and the prices are more reasonable.

Split is a perfect destination for couples and families. The best season to visit is summer, when it is lively and full of shops, stalls and all the main attractions are open. In winter the city is quiet, some shops are closed, but you can still enjoy its romantic atmosphere. You will be able to stroll calmly through its alleys without the crowds of summer, take suggestive photos, peacefully enjoy its restaurants. However, some hotels and restaurants may be closed in winter.
