Hi! Welcome to Balkans on the Road!

My name is Mirko, and I am a passionate traveler, journalist, and photographer who is here to take you on an in-depth journey through the culture and beauty of the Balkans. I would like to share my love and in-depth knowledge of the Balkans with other travelers and enthusiasts, it doesn’t matter if you are traveling for your summer holidays, for work or if you are an inveterate backpacker! I have been lucky enough to call home some of the most beautiful countries in the Balkans, and through my travels and experiences, I’ve come to appreciate the rich culture and history of this often-overlooked corner of Europe.

I’ve been traveling throughout the Balkans for years, exploring the diverse cultures and landscapes that make this region so unique. From the stunning beaches of Croatia and the charming old towns of Slovenia, to the rugged mountains of Albania and the rich history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Balkans have always been my favorite destination. I’ve had the privilege of living in several of the Balkan countries, including Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. This experience has given me a deep understanding of the region and its people, and I’ve been able to uncover some of the best-kept secrets of this incredible and little-known region, which features some of the most authentic and unexplored landscapes in Europe.

I started this blog with the intention of providing travelers like me with all the practical and useful information to better plan their trip to the Balkans. This blog would be an in-depth travel guide for anyone who wants to dive deeper into the wonders of Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria. From hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations to must-see landmarks and cultural experiences. I believe that traveling should be an immersive experience, and for this reason I would like to show you the authentic side of the Balkans. I would like to take you off the beaten track and show you those places and experiences that you wouldn’t otherwise discover.

I am also a huge food lover, always on the lookout for the best traditional dishes. I’ll take you to the best local restaurants, and show you how to make traditional dishes in your own kitchen. You’ll discover a world of flavors, from the smoky meats of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to the fresh seafood of Croatia and the delicious pastries of Bulgaria.

Furthermore, I would like to provide an insight into the complex and fascinating region’s history and politics. I have worked as a contemporary historian and researcher in the Balkans, and this has allowed me to have an interesting insight into the local culture, and how the troubled history of the region has shaped today’s Balkans. This led me to know interesting places and stories, which I usually share in my travel guides, so that you can be a better and better informed traveler, especially about the history of the places you visit and local customs.

So, whether you’re an experienced traveler or a first-timer, I hope you find this blog useful! My commitment is to provide you with travel guides and information that are as accurate and up-to-date as possible. My main goal is to allow people to travel and discover the Balkans with greater conscientiousness, in a more respectful way towards local populations and natural wonders, in a more ethical and sustainable way, encouraging the discovery of the many small local businesses, the many handicraft shops, the best regional restaurants, the many welcoming family-run guesthouses and the best tours led by local guides, also promoting ways of traveling with a lower environmental impact, such as cycling or backpacking across the Balkans, by bus or train.

Whether you’re planning a trip, or just dreaming of traveling, come with me and let’s discover the beauty, culture, and flavors of the Balkans!

A little curiosity: my name – which is quite common here in the Balkans, especially in Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia – means “the one who celebrates peace, the one who celebrates the world”. As the Latins would say: nomen omen!

Sretan put! (Have a good trip!)
